Wiser.org (formerly WiserEarth.org ) is generated by users online community of social and environmental movement that captures the work of nonprofit organizations around the globe.

Overview

Lists the page and linked non-governmental organizations (English non- governmental organizations, NGOs ), businesses, governments, groups and individuals, among others, with global challenges such as climate change, poverty, ecology, peace, water, world hunger, social justice, environmental protection, human rights employ. The term WISER is an acronym and stands for World Index of Social and Environmental Responsibility ( " World index of social and environmental responsibility "). Operator of the website Wiser.org is the non-profit organization WiserEarth.

History

Wiser.org was (April 22), established on Earth Day 2007 as an online directory of more than 100,000 organizations ( "Blessed Unrest " engl.) were mentioned in Paul Hawken book, We are the change. Hawken had amassed countless business cards from thousands of organizations over the years, but could not find a comprehensive list of all nonprofit organizations that are engaged in the fields of social justice and ecology. He estimates the total number of such organizations to well over a million and then founded Wiser.org as an online directory to capture the work of these organizations. Today Wiser.org also offers the functionality of a social network such as Groups and a function with which you can send messages. This more opportunities for mutual cooperation to be created. Although API and media content for non- commercial use are licensed (see below), Wiser.org has expanded its online directory for-profit organizations and government agencies.

Facts and Figures

On 26 January 2012, the list included more than 113,000 globally distributed organizations, more than 64,000 registered members and more than 2800 groups. The contents are divided into 47 topics and 381 sub-regions. Wiser.org is currently available in English, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

Wiser.org Directory

The Wiser.org directory refers to a master list of subject areas that are " linked " in a certain way: Registered Members can edit organizations, resources, job opportunities, events and groups, the " link " of each topic. The site offers groupware functionalities of a social network as well as a visual representation of the network. A unique feature is the possibility to propose "solutions". This allows any registered member to formulate a specific social or environmental problem and to make a corresponding solution. This can then be shared with others, modified and applied in practice. Each solution receives a publication and a network side and an associated discussion forum. Wiser.org also offers embedded Google Maps with the associated geographical data. Wiser.org programming

Since June 2009 Wiser.org offers a RESTful API, developed under the " Creative Commons 3.0 " license. The Wiser.org programming interface allows access to a detailed database of records, such as Organizations, groups, job vacancies, events, resources and solutions.
