Wittenberg (district)

The Wittenberg district is a district in the east of the German state of Saxony- Anhalt. It lies on the rivers Elbe and Schwarze Elster. County seat and at the same time with a population of 50,000 and is the largest municipality in Wittenberg.

Neighboring districts are in the north of the Brandenburg districts Potsdam- agent Mark and Teltow -Flaming, in the eastern also Brandenburg Elbe-Elster district, in the south of Saxony district Nordsachsen and west of the district of Anhalt -Bitterfeld and the independent city of Dessau.

Geography

The Elbe flows through a length of 52 km in a large semi-natural floodplain sections of the county. In the north, extending from east to west, the wooded hills of the flaming and its foothills. To the south is the largest contiguous forest in Central Germany, the Dubin Heath.

Coat of arms

Blazon: "Divided by black and silver; two obliquely crossed red swords. "

This was the official coat of arms of the Dukes of Saxe- Wittenberg as Erzmarschälle of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. The coat of arms goes directly back to the historical kingdom racing flag.

The flag of the county is along the colors black and red with guided coat of arms and hoisted across.

Economy

The industry chemical industry, machinery, packaging industry and the food and drinks industry structure-determin. Approximately 50 % of the area of the circle is used for agriculture.

Traffic

Auto transport

The motorway A9 (Berlin -Munich) leads to the northwest through the area of the district. The connection points 6 (small Marzehns ), 7 ( Köselitz ) and 8 ( Coswig (Anhalt) ) are the main motorway junctions for the cities and municipalities in the district.

By county area lead the federal highways 2 and 187, which intersect at the county seat. South of the border the same federal highways 100 and 182 on the main road in the district 2 Eutzsch the city Kemberg.

Rail transport

Through the district of Wittenberg lead two cross-regional railway lines: the railway line Berlin-Halle/Leipzig-München has in the county town of Lutherstadt Wittenberg every two hours ICE - clock maintenance and opens up as the district in regional traffic through regularly scheduled Regional Express trains in north-south direction. In west-east direction of the county is developed by the distance Dessau -Lutherstadt Wittenberg-Falkenberg/Elster with regional trains running every hour. A single-track regional train ( Duebener Heath Railway) from Wittenberg to Bad Schmiedeberg. The county is affected in the east of the railway line Jiiterbog - Riesa: On the circle area the stations Linda (Elster) and wood village lie (Elster). The stations Wörlitz and Oranienbaum of Dessau- Woerlitzer rail shall be operated only in the summer season.

Historically noteworthy are more railway lines:

  • The single-track line Wittenberg / West Straach is used only as needed for freight transport.
  • From the Dübener Heather path between Pretzschendorf (Elbe ) and Torgau -chain at Dommitzsch a track to the river Elbe from: There, held until 1989, the NVA the pioneer moderate Railway bridge over the Elbe river - it was making the connection to the Prettin - Anna Burger narrow-gauge railway (1902 - 1996) practiced.
  • The railway mountain Joke Kemberg was shut down and dismantled in the 1950s.

Bus

Public transport is since 1 January 2007, carried out by the group of companies New Wittenberg bus. This prevailed in a Europe-wide competitive bidding. The company group is formed by several regional bus companies.
