The Wittenberg station the Brandenburg town of Wittenberg is located almost exactly in the middle of the train Berlin-Hamburg route. About 5,000 passengers use daily served by around 100 passenger trains station.

Infrastructure

Access and platforms

The station is located about 1.3 kilometers from the city center on the eastern edge of the city of Wittenberg. The station building with the main platform is accessible from the west over several directly abutting streets. His platform edge has after to 2004, undergone an extensive renovation a length of 375 meters and a height of 55 centimeters, about another 60 meters platform area in the southern part are not directly connected to the through tracks.

From the middle area of the reception building extending toward the north two island platforms of 405 meters in length with a height of 76 centimeters respectively. They are connected by a 65 meter long underpass to the main platform.

A barrier- free accessibility is achieved with a wheelchair ramp next to the three road-side steps along the reception building and for the island platforms by lifts next to the stair access.

Bahnbetriebswerk

In the south of the station was already built with the construction of the Berlin- Hamburg 1846, a workshop building, which was expanded over time to the depot. It was important for the maintenance, provision and exchange of locomotives because of its location halfway between Berlin and Hamburg. 1872 there is a roundhouse was built together with a hub. North adjacent came in 1889 another, larger roundhouse with 16 levels added, which is still preserved and restored. It should be used by the steam locomotive friends Salzwedel from mid-2012 as a railway museum. Again, because then there is a rectangular shed with six original, still five locomotive stalls, which was acquired by the railway vehicle Wittenberg as workshop building 2010. Two water towers are still preserved, one of which is still operational. With the electrification of the line completed in 1997 and the maintenance-free electric locomotive operating the depot lost much of its former importance.

Distance connections

The station was built in 1846 at kilometer 126 of the Berlin- Hamburg railway. In 1851 the route Wittenberg -Stendal was opened. From 1870 onwards, was from here the branch line Wittenberg -Lüneburg, which resulted in the North Heath to the north-west of the Dömitzer Elbbrücke and Dannenberg (Elbe ) to Buchholz. This was the Wittenberg station to the important railway junction between Berlin and Hamburg. The station building of the former railway station wedge was applied between the westerly tracks of Magdeburg route and the eastern tracks of the Berlin- Hamburg railway.

Extension

The Wittenberg station was extensively renovated in the context of the development of the Berlin- Hamburg Railway since 2000. He lost his status of this island station. All tracks can now be found on the eastern side of the reception building. The so-called "Magdeburg side " lost their tracks, the route from the direction of Stendal was south of the building is pivoted on the Berlin side. In this case, the track number has been substantially reduced. As part of the construction of 280,000 tons of earth have been moved, updated approximately 22 kilometers of track, built 120 points from as well as 42 and renewed 32 km overhead line.

The sweep speed towards Berlin was increased from 70 km / h ( in 1996) to 160 km / h; an increase to 197 km / h would be possible by taking advantage of the ICE-T tilting technology. The German Railway has however omitted the use of the bow speeding at speeds over 160 km / hr. In Hamburg the speed limit is on a train station at 200 km / h

Mid-1997 was the plan approval process. Construction was planned in the same year. The planned costs were in early 1997 at around 110 million DM A total of 76 million euros have been invested, including seven million euros in new platforms.

By converting the operating costs should be reduced, simplifying the transfer and 18 acres of land to be released for urban development.

The opening of the rebuilt station was on 24 August 2004 in the presence of former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
