Władysław Konopczyński

Władysław Konopczynski, pseudonyms Dantyszek, Korzonek (* November 26, 1880 in Warsaw, † July 12, 1952 in Młynik at Ojców ) was a Polish historian, professor at the Jagiellonian University, member of the Towarzystwo Naukowe Warszawskie Polska Akademia and Umiejętności, co-founder and first chief editor of the Polski Słownik Biograficzny.

Life

Konopczynski was the son of the engineer Ignacy Konopczynski and his wife Ludwika born Obrąpalska. He graduated from the fourth high school in Warsaw, then he studied law at Warsaw University ( 1899-1904 ) and History at the University of Lviv ( 1907-1908 ) and received his doctorate there in 1908 Szymon Askenazy. In 1911 he qualified as a professor at the Jagiellonian University. In 1917, he was Professor of Modern History ibid, 1939, he was dean of the philological faculty. During the Special Action Cracow, he was arrested and imprisoned in Krakow, Wroclaw and in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. In 1940 he was released and took part in the secret underground university. After the war, he was re- dean of the Jagiellonian University. In 1948 he was forced by the Communists to abandon the work and withdraw from all functions and offices, because his publications " chauvinistic charged and full of racist fury " are.

Work

Focus of the work was Konopczyńskis the history of Poland in the 16th to 18th centuries, the history of the Polish legal system as well as the history of Polish parliamentarism. Together with Waclaw Sobieski he is considered the founder of the so-called new Krakauer history school. He initiated the historical documentary center and gave inter alia Sejmprotokolle of the 18th century ( Dyaryusze sejmowe z wieku XVIII), Stanisław August Poniatowski diaries and the great general encyclopedia ( Wielka Encyklopedia Powszechna Ilustrowana ) out. In 1921 he presented the project of the creation of Polski Słownik Biograficzny and was its first editor in chief from 1931 to 1948.
