In WMV HD but tried to establish these "standard" in the home. First efforts are evident in the HD DVD and Blu- ray Disc, where WMV HD, there also called VC-1, was admitted as a provisional codec. The first feature films available on normal DVD with WMV - HD material in stores already ( WMV HD-DVD or HD DVD -ROM called ). However, this could be a long time only on the PC play as a stand- alone players were missing, and partly an internet connection to check the playback location (a new type of regional codes) is provided by the Digital Rights Management (DRM). Meanwhile, there are more players play the even WMV-HD DVDs, where DRM is still a hurdle for them. Attempts to circumvent the playback location by connections through proxy servers, thwarted DRM. The "online" DRM is among others in Terminator 2: Judgment Day Extreme Edition used, the "offline" DRM that requires an original DVD for testing, is currently used in the available also in Germany movies to WMV HD. Since WMV - HD - DVD is a simple and cheap way with today's media / technology to store and play HD movies, this technology is traded as a rival to the newer HD media such as Blu -ray Disc and HD DVD.
