WNBA Draft

The WNBA Draft is a method of the WNBA basketball league in which the teams in the league to acquire rights to available amateur and youth players ( convened to draft =, move ) can.

History

The first WNBA draft was held on 22 January 1997. Unlike all subsequent drafts, this was divided into three drafts: Initial Player Allocation, Elite Draft, WNBA Draft. The first part was the initial player allocation, while 16 players were allocated to each of the teams in no particular order. The second part was the Elite Draft, which consisted of professional players who played in other leagues. This time, the 8 teams were able to select their players themselves. There were two rounds where each team could choose in each round a player. The last part was the WNBA Draft, where teams could again each draw a player in 4 rounds.

Since 1998, only the WNBA Draft exist. Nevertheless, it comes in the WNBA again and again to an expansion draft, when a new team in the league is a party, or to a Dispersal Draft, when a team has disintegrated.

From 1998 to 2002 there were in the WNBA Draft always 4 rounds since 2003, there are only 3 more rounds.

The Draft

The WNBA is composed of twelve teams (as of 2013). In each round of the draft, each team has a so-called draft pick, with which the individual teams can secure the rights to a player per round. The order in draft basically corresponds to the inverted final table of the previous season, so the team with the worst record the first option in the draft entitled, while those team that finished the season with the best record, the last option has in each round. To avoid that franchises lose on purpose so as to secure a better position in the Draft, the Draft Lottery was introduced, with a portion of the order for the first round of the draft is determined. At this lottery, which is performed after the regular season, take all four teams in part that the catchment missed in the previous season in the playoffs, where the worst of the four teams in front of the lottery at No. 1 and the best at # 4 in the Draft order is set. Since this is a weighted lottery, the team set to # 1 has higher chances awarded the first franchise to get than the other three teams. Consequently, has the team ranked 4 the lowest chance to get the first option. The remaining sequence in the Draft is basically the inverted final table of a season. So the rest of the worst team has the fifth choice in the draft and the best the last. The determined using draft lottery order is valid only for the first round, while the draft sequence correspond to the remaining two rounds of the inverted Final Table of the preseason.
