Woensdrecht

Woensdrecht ( listen? / I ) is a city and a municipality in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The municipality has 21,653 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 Source: CBS) and has an area of ​​91.99 km ².

Before creation of the new municipality of Woensdrecht on 1 January 1997, there was a smaller municipality of the same name. The area of ​​this municipality was 33.25 km ². The three sub- communities that were added at that time, are Ossendrecht, Huijbergen and Putte.

The name Woensdrecht goes back to the chief god Odin from the Germanic mythology. Thus the place name has a similar etymology as Woensel ( Wodanswald ) in Eindhoven.

The municipal area has an airport ( IATA code: WOE ), under the name airbase Woensdrecht also has one operated by the Netherlands Air Force military part. But mostly he is known by an operation for aircraft storage and recycling. Similar establishments are located on the flight Ahlhorn Park ( Germany ) and the Mojave Air & Space Port in Mojave Desert ( USA).
