Wohnheimsiedlung Maßmannplatz

The dormitory settlement Maßmann space was built after the Second World War from 1948 with American support of students and trainees in Munich. The idea for the foundation of the hostel is from a dedicated American occupation officer and the art historian Hermann Mau from Munich. Under the direction of the architect Werner Wirsing, still as a student, was without a building permit, but is supported by the city and U.S. occupation troops, a house in double H - shape, which is now a historical monument. By living together of students and trainees and the introduced self-government and democracy should be encouraged. By 1951 the residential complex by Erik Brown, Gordon Ludwig, Jacob Semmler, Wolfgang Fuchs and Herbert Groethuysen was extended to the west. The building is an important witness to a flow of architects who wanted a modernist reconstruction of the city of Munich.

Location

The dormitory settlement Maßmann course is located in the Heßstraße 77 and 79 Maxvorstadt on the former Maßmannbergl in central Munich. In the immediate vicinity of the University of Munich (PRT ) and only a few minutes' walk away, the Technical University of Munich (TUM ).

Live

The dormitory settlement consists of the five houses A- E, in which 22 to 28 inhabitants per share a kitchen and a lounge. The houses are all connected and surrounded by several gardens. They close around a large courtyard. Two large balconies connect the houses in A and D and the houses of C and B.

A total of 124 single rooms are available with a floor space 10-15 sqm available, several showers and toilets, and each house a lounge and a kitchen.

The residents determine in a recording session itself on the occupancy of the room. The recording sessions take place two to four times per year, depending on demand. There are however always offered guest rooms at short notice.

Cultural life

Bar

The dorm has set up a bar in the basement below the house D. This was renovated in June 2007. Each semester carries a house the Barministerium and ensures that usually on Thursday the bar is open.

Festivals

Highlights of the cultural life in the dormitory settlement Maßmann space are the three great festivals, the Maßmann Carnival, the May Festival and the summer festival. These are organized circulating from one of the houses, but being help all residents. The festivals are usually associated with live music and shows and for May Day with the traditional maypole.

Sponsorship

The support of the home is, founded on July 22, 1949 Club dormitory settlement Maßmann space V. The Association has got around 120 members, most of them former residents and residents. Active in the association's work is the twelve -member Executive Board, which is elected by the General Assembly. Four Board members must be active inhabitants, of which two again automatically hold the highest offices of government.

The local government is made up of several bodies, who are elected annually.
