Wolf Heinrich Graf von Baudissin

Wolf Heinrich Friedrich Karl Graf von Baudissin ( born January 30, 1789 in Copenhagen, † April 4, 1878 in Dresden ) was a German diplomat, writer and translator.

Life

After studying Baudissin worked as a secretary of legation in the Danish civil service and held from 1810 to 1814 in Stockholm, Vienna and Paris. In the summer of 1813 he was imprisoned for six months on the fortress Friedrichsort because of his German sentiments. From 1823 to 1854 he was the owner of Good Sophienhof at Preetz. He traveled to Italy, France and Greece, and held since 1827 mostly in Dresden. Here he worked with August Wilhelm Schlegel and Ludwig Tieck. Together with Tieck's daughter Dorothea Tieck he had a major role in the Shakespeare translations, which were founded by Ludwig Tieck line. He also translated works by, among others, Molière, Carlo Goldoni and Carlo Gozzi.

His first wife was Friederike Juliane von Baudissin ( born January 9, 1784 † March 15, 1836 ), the daughter of the diplomat Heinrich Friedrich von Baudissin. Baudissin was in 1840 married his second wife, the novelist Sophie von Baudissin, with whom he had a son born in 1847 Wolf Wilhelm Friedrich Graf von Baudissin.
