Wolf Koenig

Life

Koenig came to Dresden to the world, but emigrated with his parents in 1937 to Canada. The family settled near Galt, where they bought a farm. Koenig was first used in May 1948 with the National Film Board of Canada in contact, as a film crew of the NFB, near the farm of parents turned a farm film. Director Raymond Garceau advised the film- Koenig interested to apply at the NFB. Already in July 1948 Koenig was hired as a Splicer with the NFB and came 1950 to the Animation Studio of the NFB. You quickly recognized him as the all-rounder: In numerous animation and documentaries, he worked as an animator or camera man from the 1950s, including as a cameraman for the Oscar-winning short film Neighbours by Norman McLaren.

As a director, Koenig was the first time the end of the 1950s, active and co-directed, among others, in the documentary City of Gold and The Days Before Christmas (both 1958), are now considered NFB classics of the genre. With Colin Low, Terence Macartney Filgate, Roman Kroitor and Tom Daly Koenig was in the years to become one of the influential documentary filmmakers of Unit B of the NFB. The Unit B is still regarded " as a world-renowned source of innovative films that have become classics of the documentary". Koenigs films were unlike those of his colleagues characterized " by an elevated style and often a fine irony in the observation of human behavior and modern society ". He is regarded as an intuitive documentary with keen powers of observation. Until 1965, Koenig worked at the NFB several times with Roman Kroitor together, including the Oscar- nominated short documentary City of Gold (1958 ) and at the Paul Anka Lonely Boy movie, a pioneer of rock music-related documentary. With his work on the documentary series Candid Eye Koenig was also one of the pioneers of Direct Cinema film.

From 1962-1967 and 1972-1975 Koenig served as executive producer of the English Department of the NFB animation. As a producer, he was in 1967 nominated three times in a row for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " to 1969: For The Drag (formed in 1966, nominated 1967), What on Earth! (1966/1968) and The House did Jack Built ( 1967/1969 ). At the same time, he was still active as an animator and cinematographer for outstanding film productions, as he was in 1960 involved in the animation of Lows and Kroitors movie Universe, the Stanley Kubrick as a model for various sequences in the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey served. After 1975, Koenig worked increasingly documentary film clips and short films, but continued to be active as a producer of animation and documentaries.

Koenig retired from the film business in 1995 and settled in Westport. Since then, he occasionally occurs in the independent film sector in appearance and is dedicated to the furniture.
