Wolfe County, Kentucky
Geography
The County is located in east-central Kentucky and has an area of 577 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Menifee County, Morgan County, Magoffin County, Breathitt County, Lee County and Powell County.
History
Wolfe County was formed on March 5, 1860 from portions of Breathitt County, Morgan County, Owsley County and Powell County. It was named for Nathaniel Wolfe, a member of the Legislative Assembly.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Wolfe County 7,065 people in 2,816 households and 1,976 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 99.24 percent White, 0.24 percent African American, 0.08 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.06 percent from other races groups; 0.33 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.51 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,816 households out of which 33.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers, 29.8 percent were non-families, 27.0 percent of all households and 9.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.96.
Based on the county the population was spread from 25.9 percent population under 18 years, 9.4 per cent between 18 and 24 years, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.7 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 96.1 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 19,310, and the median income for a family was $ 23,333. Males have a median income of $ 23,859, women $ 18,952. The per capita income was $ 10,321. 29.9 percent of families and 35.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 50.2 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 26.7 percent of those 65 years.
