Geography

The County is located in east-central Kentucky and has an area of 577 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Menifee County, Morgan County, Magoffin County, Breathitt County, Lee County and Powell County.

History

Wolfe County was formed on March 5, 1860 from portions of Breathitt County, Morgan County, Owsley County and Powell County. It was named for Nathaniel Wolfe, a member of the Legislative Assembly.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Wolfe County 7,065 people in 2,816 households and 1,976 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer.
