Wolfgang Benkert

Wolfgang " Molli " Benkert ( born July 1, 1951 in Weimar ) is a former German football goalkeeper.

Wolfgang Benkert played in his youth at the BSG Motor Weimar and FC Carl Zeiss Jena. At age 19 he moved to FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt, where he later was little to goalkeeper. Overall, he was 1972-1985 in 256 DDR Oberliga games in goal for the Thuringian. In 1985 he moved to BSG Sachsenring Zwickau, where he had another 13 league bets. Then Benkert was still playing unterklassig at Robotron Sömmerda and motor Weimar and was after the turn as player-coach at SV Borussia Wuppertal active.

In the junior national team of East Germany in 1973, he played two matches in the Olympic team in the country he came in the years 1982 and 1983 to six test match inserts. At the age of 33 years he denied on September 12, 1984 in Zwickau against Greece his only game for the national football team of the GDR, when he came on in the 86th minute for Jörg Weißflog. For this application, he came but only because on this day the East German national team two games fought out. While one team took in England, Benkert played with a second team against Greece and won the game 1-0.

When choosing to Erfurt Football Player of the Century in 2000, Wolfgang Benkert third behind Jürgen Heun and Helmut Nordhaus.
