Wolfgang Hahn

Wolfgang Hahn ( born April 30, 1911 in Potsdam, † 10 January 1998 in Kassel ) was a German mathematician and professor at the Technical University Graz.

Life

Wolfgang Hahn studied from 1928 mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Göttingen. 1933 PhD in it. Isay at Schur on The zeros of the Laguerre and Hermite polynomials After that he was in the teaching profession until he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1940. He was taken prisoner and returned only in 1946 returned to Berlin. While he was employed as industrial workers, he habilitated in 1950 at the University of Berlin and received in 1952 a lecturer at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he worked intermittently until 1963. From 1959 to 1961 he took leave to set up the Indian Institute of Technology Madras a Department of Applied Mathematics. Between 1962 and 1964 he worked at various American universities and received a position as assistant professor at the University of Bonn. On 1 October 1964, took the Chair of Mathematics II at the Technical University of Graz, where he remained until his retirement in 1981. From 1967 to 1969 he was Dean of the Faculty of Science, 1969/70 Rector and Pro-Rector thereafter until 1972.

After his wife's death in 1982 he lived until 1997 in Graz and then moved with his children to Kassel, where he died in early January 1998 as a result of tumor surgery.

Research

He worked on special functions and orthogonal polynomials in particular. The Hahn polynomials are named after him.
