Wolfgang Helbig

Wolfgang Helbig ( born February 2, 1839 in Dresden, † October 6, 1915 in Rome ) was a German classical archaeologist.

Life

Helbig, son of school teacher Dr. G. Helbig, graduated from Easter 1856 Cross School in Dresden and studied from 1856 to 1861 at the Universities of Göttingen and Bonn Classical philology and archeology. In Göttingen, he joined the fraternity Hannovera. In 1861 he was with the dissertation " Questiones scaenicae " in Bonn Dr. phil. doctorate. He then completed the Joachimsthal Gymnasium in Berlin his probationary year for teachers at secondary schools and went in the fall of 1862 as a fellow of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI ) for two years after Rome.

After the departure of Heinrich Brunn to Munich, he was in 1865 appointed Second Secretary of the Institute. Larger travels took him all over Italy, Greece and North Africa, France and Russia. For his personal protection he received a diplomatic status and was appointed counselor of legation. In 1887 he retired from the service, and lived as a private scholar in Rome, which by the marriage with the Russian princess and pianist Nadejda Schakowskoy ( 1847-1922 ) was possible for him, and was also active as an art dealer. So he gave more than 950 works of art for the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen. The local area of the exhibition space for the ancient sculptures is called " Helbig Museum ".

In 1887, he has presented to the public the Manios clasp.

Helbig was the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome. In 1882 he became a corresponding member of the Society of Sciences in Göttingen; in 1893 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences appointed him also a corresponding member.

To Helbig's main scientific activities include his research on the mural in Pompeii, but above all be leaders by the public collections of classical antiquities in Rome ( 1st edition 1892, 2nd edition 1899, 3rd edition worried by Walther Amelung 1912/13 ), whose fourth, completely revised edition ( 1963-72; organized by Hermine Speier in collaboration with Helga von Heintze ) than the Helbig is a standard work today.
