Life

Wolfgang Jeschke was born in 1936 in Decin and grew up in Asperg near Ludwigsburg. According to the medium maturity, he completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker and worked in mechanical engineering. In 1959, he acquired later the High School and then studied German, English and Philosophy at the University of Munich. There was a bookseller internship at the CH Beck publishing house. Jeschke 1969 got a job as an editorial assistant on " Kindler's Literatur Lexikon ", and later as an editor.

In 1970, Herbert W. Franke, a nonfiction author of the publishing group, the house offered a science fiction novel, was remembered because Jeschke dealt for years with SF, and asked him for an opinion. The result was edited by Jeschke series " Science Fiction for connoisseurs " in Lichtenberg Publisher, in which not only Franke's novel zone appeared zero, but also Jeschkes own short story collection The Bridegroom. In the edition of some important authors were first made available in Germany in full, not on pamphlet form shortened down expenses, such as Robert Silverberg, Thomas M. Disch, and Brian W. Aldiss. As the place of the SF- lector and publisher was released at the end of 1972 by Heyne Verlag, took over Jeschke - at first with Herbert W. Franke - this position, first as a freelancer. The success of the series Heyne Science Fiction and Fantasy resulted in an increasing number of titles so that Jeschke 1978 at his farewell Kindler took and exclusively SF editor at Heyne was. After the departure Franke 1979, he was solely responsible SF editor at Heyne and remained so until 2002, when he retired. He currently lives in Munich and is still the Science Fiction Yearbook, together with Sascha Mamczak.

Work

Jeschke since the 1950s already interested in science fiction and was one of the first members of the company founded in 1955 SFCD. First short stories appeared in fan magazines and semi-professional publications, and with Ad astra he gave, along with Peter Noga, also has its own fanzine out. Over the years, his work as editor and publisher, he was little for writing, so that his work has remained relatively narrow. However, it was strongly considered and several of his texts were excellent. Characteristic of his SF texts is the atmospheric density of the described scenarios, the psychological dimensions of the protagonists, and the theme of " time travel" in all variations. He also leaves the conventions of storytelling and mounted fictitious documents ( documents about the state of the country before Cataclysm ) or returns a list consisting of equally fictitious historical events ( Cusa Acceleratio ). His first novel, The Last Day of Creation was repeatedly translated and nachaufgelegt again and again; He describes the attempt to correct the story, and his grandiose failure. Jeschke has emerged as a writer of radio plays, and there are some of these substances in one incarnation as a narrative.

Criticism

" What matters in the table of contents as a straightforward and tense thriller with no hooks and eyes, proves in literary form as a subtle, not translated to superficial effects novel with a humanistic concern. How people are used, how people deal with people is the real subject. The question of what constitutes the 'real' people, Jeschke throws in the brilliant key scene on ... "

" Romantic in its blend of exoticism, civilization skepticism and melancholy, however comforting promise Direction symbolism is, finally, the prevailing mood of the book. Wolfgang Jeschke is one of the few contemporary German authors are able to create SF- specific sense of wonder to evoke quite well with that track Escapism, but the company shall be liable with elastic bands at the reality. Similarly seemed at the time to be - narratively structured differently, of course, and probably optimistic - Osiris country, as are found in the last day of creation ... those visionary designs and scenes.
