Wolfgang Scheidel

Wolfgang Scheidel ( born March 9, 1943 in Erfurt ) is a former German luger.

Career

Raised in Ilmenau Wolfgang Scheidel launched first for the SC tractor Oberwiesenthal. The first successes celebrated the Thuringian primarily in double competition, where he worked with Michael Köhler at the youth - ( Austria ) finished EM 1962 in Bad Aussee fifth place. A year later, followed the debut in the World Championships in Imst, at the end of sixth was to book. At the World Championships in 1965 both athletes finally celebrated their greatest common success when they won the world title in Davos. 1966 moved to the newly founded Scheidel luge section of the ASK forward Oberhof, while Köhler remained in Upper Wiesenthal. Three years later, the cooperation between Scheidel and Köhler was stopped because both athletes athletic not harmonized due to weight gain, and the like. Henceforth celebrated Wolfgang Scheidel his successes multiplied in individual competition, but he experienced by winning the gold medal at the 1972 Olympics in Sapporo his sporting highlight, for which he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. He then ended his competitive sports career.

Others

After his retirement from active competition supervised Wolfgang Scheidel until 1977 when ASK forward Oberhof the young athletes, then he held until 1990, the office of Sportinstrukteurs in a NVA rest home in Forest woman. After the political changes Scheidel opened an oxygen treatment station in his home town of Ilmenau.
