Wolfgang Schwanitz

Wolfgang Schwanitz ( born June 26, 1930 in Berlin) was from 1986 to 1989 Deputy Minister of State Security of the GDR and from 1989 to 1990 Head of the Office of National Security of the GDR.

Life

Born the son of a bank clerk, he attended high school. He then completed from 1949 to 1951 an apprenticeship as a wholesale merchant. From the beginning, since the founding of the GDR, was Schwanitz member of the FDJ and fdgb. Since 1950 he was also a member of DSF and since 1953 a member of the SED. In 1951 he was a member of the Ministry for State Security (Stasi, " Stasi " ), was from 1954, among other county agency chief of Berlin- Pankow, Berlin- Weissensee. In 1956 he was appointed Deputy Head, 1958 Head of Department II ( counterintelligence ) the administration of Greater Berlin. He graduated from 1960 to 1966 a correspondence course at the Humboldt -Universität zu Berlin with specialization in Law ( graduated as a lawyer ), received his doctorate in 1973, Dr. jur. at the Law School of the Stasi in Potsdam (theme: "Fighting the enemy phenomena among young people ").

In February 1974 he was appointed as the successor of Major General Erich Wichert the head of district administration Berlin Stasi. He held this position until 1986. In 1984 he was promoted to lieutenant general of the Stasi and 1986 transferred to the Ministry. There he worked as a deputy minister until November 1989, responsible for ensuring operational and technology. In the Modrow government, he was appointed on 18 November 1989 as head of the Office of National Security, the successor organization to the Stasi. He was also a member of the Council of Ministers of the GDR. On December 14, 1989, he was suspended and dismissed on 11 January 1990 by the People's Chamber as a member of the Council of Ministers. The Office for National Security ceased to operate at 31 March 1990 an official.

From 1971 to 1974 he was a candidate from 1974 to 1986 Member of the SED district leadership Berlin, and since 1986 to 1989 Extraordinary Congress candidate of the Central Committee of the SED. 1963 Schwanitz received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze. Schwanitz is today one of the protagonists of the Society for Legal and Humanitarian Support and author of the eastern edition.
