Wolfgang Wienand

Wolfgang Wienand ( born February 22, 1972 in Cologne) is one of the most successful German fighter of the 1990s.

Life

Wienand studied at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms University in Bonn chemistry and his PhD in 2002 in organic and bio-organic chemistry at the University of Cologne. He works as a senior manager in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry in Switzerland.

Wienand is married to journalist Sabine Wienand, with whom he has three sons.

Sporting career

Wienand was a longtime foil fencer as a member of the national team of the German Fencing Federation and the German Olympic teams from Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Outstanding performances of his career were marked by injuries among others winning the Youth World Cup in 1989 in Lisbon, the 4th place at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, winning the bronze medal at the 1999 World Championships in Seoul, the second place in the individual competition at the European Championships in 1998 in Plovdiv, where he was also European champion was with the team, as well as the overall World Cup victory in 1997. Wienand has long been world number and won a total of seven world Cup victories. In addition, he was several times German champion with the team.

His coach was in 1991 who later became national coach for foil Frank -Eberhard Höltje who has been in charge of the GDR selection of foil - juniors and has even participated as a saber fencer for the GDR at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Previously Wienand was trained by Manfred Kaspar, former national coach for sword and sports director of the German Fencing Federation. His home club is the Olympic Fencing Club Bonn.

Wolfgang Wienand was a leading figure in the German national team. He ended after the 2000 Olympics his successful sporting career to devote himself to completing his doctorate and his professional career.
