Wolfram Fiedler

Wolfram Fiedler ( born September 29, 1951 in Ilmenau, † 11 April 1988, in Berlin) was a luger from the German Democratic Republic.

His athletic career began Wolfram Fiedler already during his school days in the BSG Empor Ilmenau, where he was a member until 1965. To nurture his talent, he came 1965 on Children and Youth Sports School Oberwiesenthal, where he joined the SC tractor Oberwiesenthal joined. The first major sporting triumph was winning the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Koenigssee in 1968, it was followed by the title of European Junior Champion in 1969. 1972 he became both European champion in single seater and each third in singles and in doubles competition at the Olympic Winter Games. Highlight of his career was his success at the World Championships in 1975. During the same year he was also Vice-European Champion. Although in 1976 he won the European Championships, he finished his career in the same year. He then worked as a trainer, especially in youth sport. Fiedler died in 1988 from cancer. Today the bobsledging Ilmenau bears his name.

1976 Wolfram Fiedler awarded at the end of his sports career with the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze. He received this medal also in 1972.
