Wolsfeld

Wolsfeld is a municipality in the district of Bitburg -Prüm, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Bitburg -Land. Wolsfeld is a nationally recognized tourist.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the edge of the South Eifel Nature Park in the Valley of Nims. To Wolsfeld includes the residential places Herzbach, Wolsfelderberg and in the castle.

History

Wolsfeld was first mentioned in the year 798 or 799, as a Harduwinus and his wife, the Abbey of Echternach, among other things their goods to " Wolfftualt, quod est super Situm fluuio Nimisa " gave. This document is also one of the oldest names mentions the river Nims. In the 13th century it was known as " Volvisvelt ". He belonged to the Luxembourg rule Ließem.

Coat of arms

The Hubertus stag in chief is the attribute of the local church's patron St. Hubertus. Wolsfeld is located on the busy national highway 257 between Bitburg and Echternach. A decades demanded by the residents bypass has been included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan in the most urgent needs and was within the 2 billion euros - implemented program to improve the transport infrastructure in the years 2005-2008. The side road to Wolsfelderberg served in 2012 for the 50th time as host of the Wolsfelder mountain race.

Railway

Wolsfeld station was the former Nims Sauer Valley Railway ( Erdorf - Irrel - Hedgehog ), a branch line from the Eifel track. This railway line was opened before the first World War. After destruction of the track towards the end of WW2 and resumption of operation after the war was still passenger and freight transport carried out on the track just over 2 decades. The setting of the passenger traffic ( switch to bus ) was in 1969, the decommissioning of the remaining freight was carried out step by step and finally 1995 The section Wolsfeld -. Bitburg (city) was dismantled in 1997. Immediately on Wolsfeld station a tank farm was entertained with a rail connection to supply the American airfields in Bitburg and Spangdahlem. Parts of the disused section of line are now used as bike path.
