Women's International Zionist Organization

Women's International Zionist Organization ( WIZO ) is an international, charitable women's organization with associations in 50 countries, 800 institutions and approximately 250,000 members. WIZO is the largest international women's organization in the world and takes in numerous projects of women, children and the elderly in Israel, regardless of their nationality and religion.

WIZO is recognized by the United Nations as a non-governmental organization and has a consultative status with the Economic and Social Council ( ECOSOC) of the United Nations and UNICEF.

History

The WIZO was founded in 1920 in Great Britain by Rebecca Sieff, Vera Weizmann ( wife of Chaim Weizmann ), Edith Eder, Romana Goodman and Henrietta Irwell. The goal was originally to be an umbrella organization for all Zionist women in the world. 1949, the headquarters was moved from London to Israel.

WIZO cared for 14,000 children aged 6 months to 5 years in 172 daycare centers in Israel. Special emphasis is placed both on the individual development of each child, as respects the traditions and customs of different countries of origin of children and involved.
