Women on Waves

Women on Waves ( abbreviated to WoW, German: "Women on the Waves" ) is a Dutch non-profit organization that supports the right to abortion. It was founded in 1999 by the physician Rebecca Gomperts ( a former Greenpeace activist ). The organization 's objective, particularly in countries with limited abortion laws health support in ( unwanted ) pregnancies to give or to make contraceptives available. Help is offered on a ship which acts as a mobile clinic and women who want an abortion in international waters takes along to carry out the treatment is legal ( under Dutch law ). The main focus is on non-surgical methods.

Travels

Ireland

The first trip took Women on Waves in 2001 with the ship Aurora to Ireland. Two Dutch doctors and a nurse were on board.

Poland

WoW sailed with the Langenort 2003 to Poland. Official surveys of Centrum Badania opinions found Spolecznej showed that the proportion of the population, who spoke out in favor of liberalizing the laws on abortion, after the visit of WoW rose from 44% to 56%.

Portugal

In 2004, the attempt by the organization in general to enter Portuguese waters was prevented by the government. The ship of WoW was stopped by a warship.

Spain

In 2008, the ship of Women on Waves in Valencia, Spain went inside, where it provoked different reactions. There were demonstrations for and against the organization. The Catholic News Agency reported:

When the ship wanted to create between abortion opponents and proponents, the Coast Guard tried to pull it with a rope from the port.

Morocco

In October 2012, the Royal Moroccan Navy initially prevented the entry of the abortion ship in the port of Smir. However, it was einzulaufen the activists with the ship in Smir. The port authorities prevented with a police force that people left the boat and escorted it afterwards in international waters.
