Wood Buffalo, Alberta

Wood Buffalo is a district (regional municipality of type ) in the northeast corner of Alberta, Canada. It was founded in 1995 by the merger of Fort McMurray and Improvement District 143 district and has an area of 68,454 km ², the largest district of Canada and one of the largest in North America. In the district, which consists largely of untouched nature, are huge oil sands deposits, the Athabasca oil sands.

2006 Wood Buffalo counted 79 810 inhabitants, of which the vast majority ( 64 441 ) lived in the district of Fort McMurray. 2001, there were 41 466 inhabitants.
