Wood County (West Virginia)

Wood County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Parkersburg.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern West Virginia, adjacent to Ohio, where the limit by the Ohio River is formed, and has an area of 976 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pleasants County, Ritchie County, Wirt County, Jackson County, Meigs County ( Ohio) and Athens County ( Ohio).

History

Wood County was formed on December 21, 1798 from parts of Harrison County. It was named after James Wood, a brigadier general in the American War of Independence and later governor of Virginia.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Wood County 87 986 people in 36 275 households, and 24,884 families. The population density was 92 people per square kilometer.
