The Woodcreeper ( Dendrocolaptidae ) are a family in the order of perching birds ( Passeriformes ).

Dissemination

Widespread they are in the subtropical and tropical forests in Central and South America ( from Mexico to Argentina) and live mostly solitary. Sometimes they join together to form larger groups.

Features

The beak shape varies from species to species, it can be long and curved forward and downward, as in the sickle tree hacker or short and straight as in the Rotschwanzkletterer. They have sharp claws and strong legs and feet. In the brown plumage color to males and females are similar. The wings and the tail feathers often a rusty brown color. With the help of their sharp claws and stiff tail feathers, which they use as a prop, they may well run along the trees. They feed on insects, which they find in the folds of the bark. Their nests they create in tree cavities or abandoned woodpecker holes.
