Woodruff County, Arkansas
The Woodruff County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Augusta.
Geography
The County is located in the central northeastern Arkansas and has an area of 1539 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers of water surfaces. It is bordered by the following counties:
History
The Woodruff County was formed on November 26, 1862 from parts of Jackson County and St. Francis County. It was named after William E. Woodruff (1795-1885), the founder and editor of the Arkansas Gazette.

According to the census of 2000, there were 8,741 people in Woodruff County. Of these, 142 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 3,531 households and 2,439 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 67.86 percent White, 30.75 percent Black or African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.17 percent from other races groups; 0.81 percent are descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 0.79 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,531 households out of which 30.9 per cent of children or young people under the age of 18 who lived with them. 48.6 percent were married couples living together, 16.7 percent were single mothers, 30.9 percent were non-families. 28.2 percent of all households were single-person households, and 14.2 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size is 2.97 people.
26.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 to 24, 24.5 percent between 25 and 44, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were an average of 84.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 22,099, and the median income for a family $ 27,824. Males had a median income of $ 24,051, women $ 17,995. The per capita income was $ 13,269. 21.7 percent of families and 27.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
