History

The opening of the station was made in 1849 by the South Eastern Railway. The station building was replaced by a new building twice: in 1906 by a brick building in 1996 by a modern steel and glass construction. On behalf of Transport for London, a branch line of the Docklands Light Railway was extended up to this point. There was a tunnel which, starting from the station passes under King George V of the River Thames. Construction began in June 2005, which took place on 12 January 2009.

During the 2012 Summer Olympics Woolwich Arsenal was destination for visitors to the shooting events at the nearby Royal Artillery Barracks. If the project is implemented as planned Crossrail, will be located roughly 200 meters north of an underground station for this train connection through the city center.
