Worcester Academy

Worcester Academy is a private, religiously neutral education institution in Worcester, Massachusetts (USA). The school is divided into a middle school (6th to 8th grade ) with about 150 students and an upper school ( 9th to 12th grade ) with about 500 students. In addition, it is also possible to enroll as a so-called post- graduate (this is mainly used by people who want to write to (re- ) college application process ). Currently, about 80 students are enrolled from 10 different nations.

The motto of the school is the Greek phrase " Έφικνού τών Καλών " ( in eng. " Achieve the Honorable "), which translates roughly to " Achieve the Honorable ".

History

Was founded the school in 1834 under the name Worcester County Manual Labor High School, but was renamed 13 years later at Worcester Academy. 1869 took over the school office at its present site, on the Union Hill in Worcester. To 1856 and also in 1890 to 1974, the school for women was not open but is now mixed. In 1987, the school became a middle school added (previously they only offered to visit the school to upper ) and in 1996 came to the 6th grade.

Campus

The school campus of the Worcester Academy is currently spread over four campuses: the main site, the Francis A. Gaskill Field ( just two blocks itself from the school ), the New Balance Fields as well as a renovated house near the campus, primarily and for administravie purposes is needed for the care of the former. 2006 bought the school nor additional land between Gaskill Field and the school grounds to build sports facilities there.

Several of the old brick buildings on the main site were included in the American national historic registers, including the Chester W. Kingsley Laboratories, the Joseph H. Walker Hall, the Reverend Robert J. Adams Hall as well as the William H. Dexter Hall. The rector lives in the so-called Daniel W. Abercrombie House, named after the head of the school of 1882 until 1918. A new building on campus is the Harold G. "Dutch " Rader Hall, in which the library and the classroom of middle school are located. On campus right next to the Walker Hall is the Megaron, which is used together with the Adams Hall as a canteen.

One of the best known and most notable building on campus is the Lewis J. Warner Memorial Theater, a gift from Harry Warner, the then president of Warner Brothers Studios. He dedicated the building to the memory of his son Lewis Warner, shortly after he finished school in 1928, died. Still the ( weekly ) school assemblies are held in this theater and the building is actively used for school's own theater or musical productions. In addition to this theater also the Andes Pit Theatre exists in the basement of Walker Hall.

Sports

The Worcester Academy is a member of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council and compete primarily against the Phillips Exeter Academy, Phillips Academy Andover, Deerfield Academy, Cushing Academy, Lawrence Academy, Governor Dummer Academy, Loomis Chaffee and Milton Academy.

The school offers a very diverse sport activities ranging from basketball, baseball, to cross country running. Students are required to enter two of the three trimesters either in a sports team or play in a theater production.

Others

In September 2006, the Worcester Academy from Boston Magazine as the best school for math and total voted number 16 of the best private schools in the Boston area ( and the best in Worcester County ).
