Worcester County (Maryland)

The Worcester County is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of Maryland. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Snow Hill.

Geography

The county is located on the Atlantic coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. It is bordered on the north by Delaware, and on the south by Virginia. The Worcester County has an area of 1,799 square kilometers; of which 575 square miles ( 33.88 percent) of water. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Worcester County was formed in 1742 from parts of Somerset County. It was named after the Earl of Worcester.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Worcester County 51 454 people in 22,574 households. The population density was 42 people per square kilometer. In the 22,574 households lived statistically 2.16 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 82.0 percent white, 13.6 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 1.1 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 3.2 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

18.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 23.0 percent were 65 years or older. 51.6 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 47,829. The per capita income was $ 31,626. 12.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
