Words of Institution

As an institution narrative is referred to in the liturgy that portion of the Eucharistic Prayer, in which the actions and communications of Jesus at the Last Supper is mentioned. The words of Jesus are quoted in a biblical or liturgical edited version. Thus, it will be recalled, that what the Church does with the Eucharist, done on behalf of and in memory of Jesus Christ.

The theological background

First addressee of the text is God who is so explicitly addressed in some form in the Canon Romanus in you form. So this is not really a report, but a piece of prayer. According to Western tradition ( which is occupied since Ambrose ) causes Christ himself through his supper words sanctification ( consecration ) and transformation of the Eucharistic elements (bread and wine). Common belief of the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Churches is that the transformation of bread and wine is not the work of men, but is accomplished by the Holy Spirit. However, on closer inspection noticed that the words of institution only ( biblical ) are reasons for the change, ie the consecration at this point is not necessarily done.
