The danwei (单位chinese /单位, Pinyin danwei, literally translated as " department " ) was after the family is the smallest social unit in the People's Republic of China. When companies provide their employees with workers' housing estates available, then an essential condition of Danwei is already fulfilled: the unity of living and working. A university faculty also formed a danwei. A rural municipality or villages were never considered Danwei, but on the other hand, a state factory, even if they liegte in rural areas, already. In large cities there were so village-like mini- communities.

Characteristic was the lifting of anonymity. The Danwei should create identity: On the phone you always logs first with the name of Danwei, only then to the own. The danwei was not only a job, but also a social and political unit that governed the lives of its members comprehensive and controlled. The Danwei took over a number of welfare functions, such as pensions, medical care, political and social control ( up to the choice of a partner ), children's garden and in larger danweis schools. The most important welfare function of the danwei was the lifelong labor warranty.
