Worku Bikila

Worku Bikila ( born May 6, 1968 in the province of Arsi ) is a retired Ethiopian long-distance runner.

His first international success was winning the silver medal in the 5,000 -meter run at the Track and Field Championships Africa 1992 in Mauritius. In the same year he won at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in sixth place over this distance. At the Track Championships Africa 1993 in Durban he was third and a short time later at the IAAF World Championships in Stuttgart Fourth 5000 m. After he finished sixth in Gothenburg at the World Athletics Championships in 1995, he competed in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta over 10,000 m. He won his heat, reached the finals but only the 17th Place. At the 1997 World Championships in Athens, he was twelfth over 5000 m.

Thereafter, he focused increasingly on road runs. So he won the Zevenheuvelenloop among others in 1997. The following year he repeated his victory there, and also sat down by the Parelloop and at the Tilburg Ten Miles. He was second in the Zevenheuvelenloop and 2001 fourth at the 20 van Alphen 1999. In each of eight he was at the Paris Marathon in 2001 and the Paris Half Marathon 2002. Internationally, he joined most recently at the World Half Marathon Championships in 2002 in Brussels in appearance, where he broke in on rank 37 and together with Tesfaye Jifar and Ambesse Tolosa third place in the team score won.

Worku Bikila is 1,75 m tall and weighed 59 kg in his playing days. He runs a hotel in Addis Ababa is named after him and a fountain construction company.
