World Chess Championship 1907

At the Chess World Cup 1907 world champion Emanuel Lasker defended his title against Frank Marshall.

Prehistory

After his victory in the rematch 1896/97 against Wilhelm Steinitz, Lasker had for 10 years does not defend his title. An offer of the St. Petersburg Chess Club to organize a match against Mikhail Chigorin, Lasker had also rejected as an offer of the Moscow chess clubs at a fight with Siegbert Tarrasch. An already agreed for the fall 1904 competition with Tarrasch could not take place because Tarrasch had been injured in an accident.

Finally found himself with Frank Marshall a challenger. He had won the tournament in 1904 and 1906 Cambridge Springs tournament in Nuremberg. Whether he was the strongest potential challenger, but was doubtful. After all, he had in 1905 played a match against Tarrasch, had struck at the Tarrasch him clearly ( 8 -1 = 8).

Organization and rules

The world title fight against Marshall was of chess clubs in no less than five cities organized: New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Memphis, Chicago and Baltimore. Winner should be the one who had won the first eight games.

Course

The competition began on January 26, 1907, three wins in a row for Lasker. On April 6, Lasker won the eighth victory and Marshall had thus even more clearly defeated ( 8, -0, = 7) than it had Tarrasch done two years earlier.
