World Chess Championship 1954

In the Chess World Cup 1954 Mikhail Botvinnik defended his title successfully against Vasily Smyslov.

The match took place on March 16, 1954 to 13 May 1954 at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. The race for the championship was scheduled for 24 games. Of these, both won counterparty seven, ten more draws. The rules stipulated that in case of a tie after 24 games of the world champions would retain his title.

Right from the start attracted the world champion with 3 ½ points from 4 games of it. However, Smyslov put away this losing streak, and with a victory in the seventh game started an impressive comeback. After Botvinnik in the eighth game of leaving out the win, Smyslov won three consecutive times and went 6-5 in the lead. Never had lost three games in a row Botvinnik. However, even Botvinnik was rugged qualities, and in the following 5 games he turned 4-1 wins the match on 9:7. As a result, although Smyslov managed an equalizer, but to win the title, it was not enough. This should succeed him until 1957.
