World Chess Championship 2007

The World Chess Championship 2007 was held in Mexico City from 12 to 30 September 2007. Eight players participated in the double round-robin tournament.

The Indian Viswanathan Anand won the tournament and thus the world title with 9 out of 14 points. He won four times and remisierte 10 times, so he was the only player of the tournament unbeaten. In the World Chess Championship 2008, he defended his title against the previous champion Vladimir Kramnik.

Background

For the time being the last time the World Cup was played in tournament form, as of 2010 they will only be between the world champion and his challenger, the winner of a duel between the FIDE World Cup winners and the FIDE Grand Prix winner is determined. The challenger Regulations for 2008 and 2009 has been fixed in the contract before the unification fight in 2006.

The FIDE World Chess Championship 2005 was also a double round-robin tournament, but at that time the world championship between the FIDE World Champion and the classical world champion Kramnik, who refused was to participate divided. In his opinion, the World Cup should be decided in a competition of the world champion against a challenger. Shortly after the 2005 tournament, FIDE announced that the World Cup will be decided in the form of a double round tournament 2007.

In May 2006 the FIDE confirmed that in the autumn of the same year, a unification fight between the FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov and the classical world champion Kramnik would take place. The race conditions were:

Qualification

The first four of the FIDE World Cup 2005 were directly qualified for the tournament in 2007. Topalov but lost his place in the unification bout 2006 Kramnik.

Candidates competitions 2007

A place in the Candidates tournament was reserved for the FIDE World Champion 2004, Rustam Kasimjanov. Five places were awarded to the players who were best placed in the FIDE World Rankings in July 2004 and January 2005 and who had not already qualified before. These were: Péter Lékó, Michael Adams, Judit Polgár, Alexei Shirov and Bacrot Étienne. The remaining ten places went to the top ranked player in the FIDE World Cup 2005, which had not otherwise qualified.

The candidates tournament took place from May 26 to June 14, 2007 in Elista, a town in Kalmykia, Russia, instead. It was originally planned as a knockout tournament over two rounds, so each would have a player qualified by a quarter of the starting field. In September 2006, FIDE proposed a change towards a round-robin tournament with only one round before this decision was rejected, and the tournament was held as originally planned.

Top seeds was the winner of the World Cup in 2005, Levon Aronian. The remaining players were grouped according to their Elo rating according to the FIDE world ranking list from January 2006. In the second round the winner of the match 1-16 will play against the winner of the match 8-9, the winner of the match 2-15 played against the winner of the match 7-10, and so on.
