World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations

The ECE regulations designate a set of internationally agreed common technical regulations for motor vehicles as well as parts and equipment of motor vehicles. ECE derives from Economic Commission for Europe, the name of the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations (UN / ECE).

Basics

The basis is that decided on 20 March 1958 in the UN / ECE and amended with effect from 16 October 1995 ' Agreement concerning the adoption of uniform technical prescriptions for wheeled vehicles, equipment and parts which can be fitted and / or used on wheeled vehicles (s) can, and the conditions for reciprocal recognition of approvals granted on the basis of these prescriptions " are currently, 47 states and the European Community are Contracting Parties. The signatory go far beyond the European Union ( EU) only.

With this convention, the adoption of uniform technical prescriptions, especially for motor vehicles, as well as mutual recognition and approval by the Parties to the Convention will be possible at the international level. This is to reduce the trade barriers especially. Since 1958, over one hundred ECE regulations were adopted on the basis of the Convention. The regulations are recommendations that can be integrated by the respective Parties in their national legislation. The European Community may adopt ECE regulations also apply to all of the European Community Member States. In this case there is no need for additional legal instrument with which these regulations or amendments to regulations are adopted into national law.

Most of these ECE regulations are adopted by a large majority of the Parties and each integrated into national law. They obtain most of the parts and equipment of motor vehicles that are for granting approval of concern. According to the technical progress, the regulations are constantly adapted.

On each vehicle, component or item of equipment for which an ECE approval has been granted, an international approval mark must be affixed (→ ECE approval mark ), which consists among other things of a circle in which the letter "E" and the number of the country the country which has granted approval. "E1" therefore stands for Germany, " E58 " for Tunisia.
