World Leprosy Day

The World Leprosy Day is an international memorial and action which is celebrated on the last Sunday in January.

History

The World Leprosy Day was introduced in 1954 by the Frenchman Raoul Follereau, "the apostle of the lepers ." He wanted to draw attention to the plight of those affected. At that time the WHO counted approximately 15 million leprosy patients worldwide, a cure was not possible.

Today, leprosy is curable, but still not eradicated. Each year, about 200,000 people in it. The importance of World Leprosy Day is therefore still valid and now an established institution in approximately 130 countries around the world.

Activities

Worldwide numerous religious and secular organizations to engage on leprosy that day educate, to raise funds and to help those affected. In Germany, among others, calls the German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association ( DAHW ) for support.

Date

Raoul Follereau chose the last Sunday in January, to commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who has been involved, among other things for lepers.
