World Map 1:2,500,000

The World Map 1:2,500,000 (English World Map 1:2,500,000, Russian Карта Мира 1:2,500,000 ) is an internationally edited and standardized map series. The term Карта Мира or in transcription Karta Mira for this map series is now also common outside the Soviet Union or Russia. The Karta Mira consists of a total of 224 main blades and 38 overlapping leaves. They form the entire earth ( land and water land) according to a uniform scale, coloring and drawing system. The Karta Mira was produced 1956-1975 by cartographers from Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the GDR, Poland, the Soviet Union, Romania and Hungary.

The preparation of a world map with a scale of 1:2,500,000 has been discussed since the late 1940s, including because many cartographers were dissatisfied with the work on the International map of the world 1:1,000,000 ( IWK ). The IWK had suffered a serious setback by destroying the Central Bureau of the Map of the World in London during the Second World War, was so uncertain whether the IWK could ever be completed.

The initiative to establish the Karta Mira took cartographers from Hungary ( Sándor Radó, Peter Halasz, E. Foldi, Istvan Joo ), from the Soviet Union ( Grigory A. Ginzburg [ Григорий А. Гинзбург ], Ilya Andreyevich Kutuzov [ Илья Андреевич Кутузов ] ) and from the GDR ( Erfried Haack, Horst Nischan, Manfred Pateisat ). The production of the 262 leaves was divided on the Geodetic Services of the countries involved. Thus, to be produced by the East German VEB Hermann Haack leaves from the Geo- Cartographic Institute Gotha and the VEB Kombinat Geodesy and Cartography in Leipzig and Potsdam were printed. The Soviet Union transferred sheets were sent by the Department of Geodesy and Cartography [ Главное Управление геодезии и картографии ] in Moscow ago. Proofs of several sheets were submitted by the participating East German cartographer at an international meeting in December 1963 in Erfurt. The first edition of all leaves was 1975 completely.
