World Ocean Review

The World Ocean Review is a comprehensive report showing the state of the oceans, the interactions between the ocean and the ecological, economic and socio-political conditions. He shall inform the general public about the state of the oceans, without spreading bad news and disaster messages.

The volumes in printed form issued by a company founded by Nicholas Gelpke non-profit organization maribus at Mare - book publishing. All contents are freely available in PDF format on the homepage of the project is available.

The contents of the wors reflect its own account against the current state of scientific knowledge, this has been achieved through the close cooperation between the Cluster of Excellence " The Future Ocean" in Kiel, the International Ocean Institute in Malta and the issuing Mare -Verlag. The issues with which the World Ocean Review are concerned, leaning very close to the research areas of the Cluster of Excellence Future Ocean. They are presented in detail linguistically and visually, objectively understandable. The range of subject areas ranging from an introduction to the climate system ground on fossil fuels from the ocean up to the International Law of the Sea. The entire work under the motto: "Living with the oceans ."

About 40 scientists at the Kiel Cluster of Excellence " The Future Ocean" have summarized numerous studies of climate and marine research in the reports. The "World Ocean Review " was published in 2010 for the first time and will be published at regular intervals. The scientific uncertainty to all who serve, active and well-founded want to participate in the current discussions in the field of marine research itself.

The first volume has yet generally deals with the topics of the ocean but for the other issues one has made special to address individual issues.

World Ocean Review Volume 1: Living with the oceans

Chapter

1 The oceans, engine of global climate

This chapter provides an introduction to the complex climate system of the earth, and especially in the interactions between Earth's atmosphere, cryosphere, ocean, lithosphere and biosphere.

2 As climate change alters the chemistry of the oceans

Here, among other things, the relationship between the CO2 uptake of the ocean, ocean acidification and the associated risks to the marine ecosystem are explained on the basis of the latest knowledge. Furthermore, it is discussed the impact of climate change on methane hydrates on the seabed.

3 The uncertain future of the coasts

This chapter deals with sea level rise due to thermal expansion, the melting of ice landgebundenem and the associated dangers for many coastal regions. It will also address the anthropogenic influences in coastal areas.

4 terminus ocean - from the pollution of the seas

From the over-fertilization of the ocean on persistent organic pollutants ( such as POP = persistent organic pollutants) to the waste and oil in the sea is hazardous to the ocean but also for humans. These problems are discussed objectively in this chapter.

5 effects of climate change on the marine ecosystem

Even small changes in climate can have a huge impact on a variety of organisms of different parts of the ecosystem ocean. Here, among other matters snowball effects are described by way of example. Furthermore, also addresses the spread of marine organisms from certain regions to other regions and their effects.

6 From the exploitation of living resources - fisheries

In this chapter, an introduction is first given in the matter of fishing at sea. It addresses the need for fish stocks for the people just as the overfishing of these stocks is discussed. The causes and possible improvement of fisheries management are also part of this chapter.

7 Natural Resources and Energy from the sea

Fossil fuels, marine mineral resources, methane hydrate, offshore production of renewable energy hold great potential for the people, but also partly dangers not only for the climate and the environment. All this is discussed in this chapter.

8 The sea - the global transport

This chapter mainly deals with economic aspects of world maritime transport, but is also concerned with the growing threat of piracy and terrorism in the global maritime transport.

9 Medical knowledge from the sea

Nowadays, not only new active compounds from marine organisms may be ( for example, for cancer therapy) won, but it can also cause research is required for disease development. With the decoding of new substances, the research partly very old diseases and the legal situation of marine medicine research, this chapter.

10 The International Law of the Sea - a potent set of rules

In this chapter, we discuss the legal order of the oceans. Issues such as the protection of marine mammals and the legal situation of the country borders the Arctic will be explained in more detail here.

World Ocean Review Volume 2: The Future of Fish - fisheries for the future

The importance of marine fish and fisheries for present and future food of the world's population will be treated in a total of 5 chapters: How do marine ecosystems? What are the benefits of fish as food for humans? What dangers does the global appetite for fish?

World Ocean Review Volume 3: Raw materials from the sea - Opportunities and Risks

The WOR 3 deals with the use of the ocean as a raw material supplier. The chapters are taking place for over 100 years production of natural gas and petroleum, the mining of metals ( manganese nodules ) and perhaps the future promotion of methane hydrate and each developing from problems and dangers.
