World Robot Olympiad

The World Robot Olympiad (WRO ) is an international competition in which the Lego Mindstorms system serves as the basis.

The WRO will be held each having different tasks in several ages and categories.

From a certain minimum number of registered teams teams for international excretion of the WRO, the world championship of the WRO, be able to ( in 2013, for example, in Jakarta, 2014: Moscow) qualify, which takes place every year at a different location.

Competitive Classes

The WRO in Germany will be held in two competition categories: Regular Category and Open Category. There are the ages Elementary ( 8-12 years ), Junior (13-15 years) and Senior (16-19 years).

Within the Regular Category of basic robotics competition of the WRO takes place. Participants in this category construct in 2s or 3s teams robots from LEGO internationally identical tasks. Only LEGO materials may be used for the construction. There are some specifics: The teams are allowed to build their robot while before the actual competition and program, but must bring it to the competition in all items. Within 150 minutes, the teams then have to put together their robot again. This calls for a surprise rule ( change of tasks or rules ) the creativity and spontaneity of the teams out. The assembly must be made without photos and instructions. Following the robot teams compete in several rides on the game board. The team with the most points at the end of the day competition.

Open category

The open category is based on the theme of each WRO season. Participants in this category build and construct a robot model, which represents the theme of the season. The built models need to be built in the core only with LEGO Mindstorms and agile programming. It can be used to build the complete model, other materials. A presentation of the project by the team, the real object of this competition dar. In this presentation the design, construction, programming, and creativity and innovation are valued solution.

Development of competition in Germany

The competition will be conducted eV in Germany since 2012 by the Association TECHNOLOGY THRILLED.

In recent years, competitions in age groups WRO WRO Junior and High School were advertised in Germany only in the " Regular Category". Since 2013, the open category will be offered and this also includes the age group WRO Elementary School.

The offer of the WRO was expanded for 2013 and offer a competition at several locations in Germany. A total of 98 teams participated in the eight competitions in the Regular Category in April / May, and 13 teams via video qualification in the open category part. The teams were able to qualify for the regional competitions for the Germany finals on June 8, 2013, and fight there to the starting places for the World Cup. When Germany finals there were two starting places in each age class junior and senior in the Regular Category, and a total of four starting positions in the open category will be awarded for the WRO final in Jakarta ( Indonesia).

Since the competition season 2014, all three age classes are offered in two competition categories and also introduced a new, improved, competition mode: There are now four competition runs down and the ranking is based on the two best runs of a team.

World Robot Olympiad in Switzerland

The association TECHNOLOGY THRILLED eV accompanied the Swiss organization IngCH - the official WRO National Organizer - as operational partners and takes on some tasks that can be handled together.

The competition in Aarburg is also the final of the WRO in Switzerland in 2013. The winner and the two first-placed team ( depends on the number of registrations ) qualify directly for the WRO final in Jakarta ( Indonesia) in November 2013.
