World Tree (role-playing game)

World Tree is a fantasy pen -and- paper role-playing game in which players play mostly anthropomorphic beings ( the primes ). It was published by Bard Bloom and Victoria Borah Bloom in 2001 by Padwolf Publishing. World Tree has been nominated for the Ursa Major Awards 2001 for the awards Best Anthropomorphic Game and Best Anthropomorphic Published Illustration.

The focus of World Tree are species and civilizations. These consist mainly of anthropomorphic animals, or ( to a far lesser extent ) from classical mythological creatures or their modifications together. Together they live on a huge cluster of world trees, trees with branches that are thousands of kilometers long and even several million kilometers protrude into the depths - as they are at all limited. Magic is in the World Tree as present and commonplace as the gods who constantly watch their creation from the sky.

The world of World Tree

Arboricultural

The World Tree, on the World Tree plays consists of innumerable tribes, all of which are thought by the inhabitants of this world as connected. Each of these strains has a trunk diameter of about 300 kilometers and an estimated 4 million to 900 million kilometers - so they are actually limited. The branches of these strains are about 75 kilometers wide and tens of thousands of kilometers long, even repeatedly more branches ausbildend and ultimately a change between the various tribes enabling. Since these branches are flattened at its top, a comfortable life on these is possible. In them there is anything we find on our world: forests, rivers, lakes, mountains, steppes, and much more. Here live the most civilized races, in particular the so-called Primes, the 8 races that are at the center of creation. And the sides ( the so-called vertical) are entirely covered and a more or less habitable, as well as the underside of the branches. But can be found in these areas outsider of society and especially monsters and other varieties of creation that make the civilized races life difficult. In general, the Primes live on the top branches of the world tree, where still occurs enough sunlight and thus the climate is most pleasant. The further one goes down, the terrible monsters and creatures stranger hits on you.

Astronomy

The most striking difference between the sky of the World Tree and our sky is that the gods are actually and permanently visible in the sky at World Tree. More or less motionless watching them from above their creation, however, without actively interfering in this. Even the cardinal directions are determined for them - even if rarely directions are used as directional information; we rather use directional terms that relate to the tree trunk. But besides that, the sky is little comparable with ours. The crystalline sun does not circle the world tree, but it moves in a circular path about him - day and night caused by the fact that they can self-ignite or goes out at regular intervals. There are two moons, one of which is so close that airship pilots fly there every now and then ( a limitation of the atmosphere there is not in the sense ); while the other moves in confused, unnachvollziehbaren tracks across the sky. But also a moving stardust snake or three constantly dueling with each other fencers can be found in the sky image; as also some other strange things, partly a sense fulfilling, partly no ( obvious ).

Materials

In the world of World Tree, there are many people known materials, but with some significant differences. There are a myriad of different types of wood more, especially those with magical properties, however, there is virtually no metals and even less stone. Metals are only on rare plants that have it as a "fruit", or whose leaves are metallic to find - or be produced by magic.

Technology

The technology of World Tree is roughly equivalent to that of our 18th century, with parts less pronounced, and other parts again far stronger and even through today's technology reaching out (made possible by intense preoccupation with this aspect and the use of magic ).

Policy

On the whole, the eight prime races live together in city-states in peace and harmony. Between these city-states but there are striking differences in politics, law and society. In fact, every form of society is to be found in World Tree, from absolute monarchies and dictatorships over democracies to Ochlokratien.

Breeds

In the center of creation are called Primes. Due to the gods and their actions, we know that they are the most important of all races. All other races are (very speaking in the overall picture of creation for their relevance ) referred to as non- prime. A key feature of the World Tree is that it ( like elves, dwarves, trolls and the like) are no human or human-like races.

Primes

The seven gods have created a total of eight prime- breeds.

  • Cani are anthropomorphic dogs. They are very socially oriented, have strong social ties and complex networks of loyalties.
  • Herethroy are anthropomorphic crickets or beetles. They have six limbs and a hard exoskeleton, but they spend most of their lives in harmony with the land - either they are at work in the fields, or sing in harmony together in the evening and night hours.
  • Orren are anthropomorphic otter. They are wild and easy to excite, engage new interests just as quickly as they dropped them when they are bored.
  • Rassimel are anthropomorphic raccoons or skunks. They are extremely smart, invest all their energy in a few lifelong interests, to the point of obsession.

In addition to these four major races, there are four others. These together make up not even 1% of the prime population.

  • Goromor are anthropomorphic bears. They are wild and heroic, constantly feel like a good fight.
  • Khtsoyis are floating octopus. You have 7 tentacles and 5 eyes, are not considered to be very intelligent and are often violent and criminal.
  • Sleeth are great panther. They are dangerous predators and a loner, a dreaded by many race.
  • Zi Ri are small dragons. They are the rarest breed of all, not affected by natural aging processes and thus immortal in this sense.

Non- Primes

In addition to the Primes, there are still thousands of other breeds. These are as diverse as the Primes itself Some of them are their friends, some trading partners, and some bitter enemies.

Magic

Magic is omnipresent in the World Tree. The whole world is created through it and get through it every living thing is alive. Every living thing (or at least almost any ) is to act in a position magic of his childhood. This he can Cley, raw unformed magical energy (referred to in other control systems usually as mana). Magic flows seamlessly into the everyday life and made this far more enjoyable than it would be without magic.

This course also has a major impact on the life adventurers, as each character can at least act a little bit of magic. The presence of spontaneous magic, which is devised from one moment to the other, allow yourself to many problems completely different approaches and solutions.

Control system

World Tree uses a craft -based leveling system, which is a standalone D20 based system has estimated. Also suitable poker cards (to determine the Initiative) for combat situations for use. The experience points awarded is a learning-by -doing system dar. addition to D20 for all skill checks are also numerous other cubes (D2, D3, D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D100 ) are used. This is always a distinction between simple litters, and litters stress. Simple throws are written with dN ( where N is the number of pages of the cube ). They are all non-problematic transactions; that require a dice roll, but where a failure or a success can exceed any serious limits. Stress throws, however, are written with sN ( where N is the number of pages of the cube ). Here, a roll of 1, lead to a catastrophic failure (assuming he is confirmed by a separate litter), whereas you roll the dice again and allowed to count the second result for the first, when you roll the maximum result with the dice. Whenever the character fail catastrophically or may reach a phenomenal success, stress throws are used - most often in combat situations.
