Worsted

As a worsted yarn is called, the sliver from the wool, so-called comb wool, of other fine animal hair, man-made fibers - manufactured or of mixtures of these fibers by the worsted spinning process ( especially polyester and Polyacrynitrilfasern ). The yarns produced from the sliver of cotton are not taken into worsted yarns.

Preparation and description

The sliver of wool is made be removed from the starting material by combing the raw wool, the short fiber pieces and impurities ( pimples, Nissen, vegetables, called noils ). Repeated pre-stretching, warping, possibly Nachkämmen and mixing the fibers are uniformly aligned and parallel. The sliver is then further processed on special spinning machines and receives its spinning and possibly in a further process step, his turns of twist.

The minimum length of the processed wool fibers is 60 millimeters. For soft worsted fibers are usually 100 to 125 mm length used for hard worsted 125-160 millimeters. According to DIN 60410 are the commercial intricacies of simple worsted between 105 dtex (Nm 96) and 10,000 dtex (Nm 1), the subtleties between 125 decitex ( 80 Nm ) and 2000 dtex (Nm 5) are often used. The spinning of worsted yarns is usually in the Z- direction, single-stage threads in the S direction.

Worsted yarns are solid, smooth and uniform yarns that have a low hairiness, so little protruding fiber ends. They are mainly used as yarns especially in high-quality outerwear ( knitted and woven ), socks articles, but also increasingly sophisticated functional textiles or home textiles.
