Woudsend

Woudsend ( Frisian Wâldsein ) is a town in the municipality Wymbritseradiel in the Dutch province of Friesland. The population is about 1,400 (as of 2009 ).

Location

The village lies at the crossroads of several waterways. The Ie is the link to the nearby Sleatemer Mar in the south, the Wâldseinder Rakken connects the village to the west in the Hegemer Mar and the place Heeg. In the north Woudsend is connected through the Nauwe Wimerts with the places IJlst and Sneek, to the east of the Wellesleat forms a connection to the Koevorder sea and the Prinses Margriet Canal.

Woudsend is close to the N354, which connects the main road and Lemmer Sneek.

History

Originally Woudsend is an agricultural settlement in the territory of the municipality Ypecolsga. The self-development as a village dates back to about the year 1000. In 1337 Woudsend is first mentioned. In this year a Carmelite monastery was founded. Its development as a trading and shipping center owes the place to its convenient location in central waterways. The Woudsender Ee was on the route of the Zuiderzee ( IJsselmeer ) to Sneek and Leeuwarden IJlst as well. Its heyday was the place in the 18th and 19th centuries. , 1749, there were 734 people, of which more than a third were employed in the fishing and shipping. By 1750, had about 25 to 30 ocean-going vessels Woudsend as home port. In 1825, 17 people die in flooding in the subsequent die than 100 people of the community in a flood disaster ( total of 4000 in Friesland). In 1840 the town had 1,200 inhabitants in 1890 and lived here 1,400 people. Today Woudsend is a location for water sports. Many boats come down the road from Lemmer and Sloten for Hegemer Mar and to Sneek over here.
