Wouter Crabeth I

Wouter Crabeth (* 1520 in Gouda, † 1589 in Gouda ) was a Dutch glass painter of his time.

Life

Wouter Crabeth was a member of the well-known painter and glass artist family Crabeth. His exact date of birth is not known and has been reconstructed from other life data. He was a son of Pieter Crepel ( Crippled Peter ) Crabeth and is about 15 years younger brother of the glass painter Dirck Crabeth. Much of his early life is unknown. He is first mentioned in the records of the Municipal Archives in 1542 in connection with the sale of his father's house. He married (probably before 1560) Neeltje, daughter of Govert van Proyen and Clara Dircxdr. de Vrije. This emerges from a recording in churches archive from September 1, 1560, said: ". A child by Wouter Pietersz, glass painter, was buried ." Pieter Wouters son, who later occupied important positions in the city administration, was born about 1568. 1564, he bought a house on the back of so-called Vismarktes, where he apparently lived until his death.

Wouter is mentioned in Gouda for the first time in 1559 in connection with the stained glass windows in the Sint Janskerk. What he has done before, so far remains unknown. He could have stayed in Italy and worked there as a glass painter. There are, however, no reliable information. What is certain is that he carried out his first stained glass windows for the Sint Janskerk in 1562. This work actually shows a familiarity with the Italian and Antwerp tradition that suggest that he has lived and learned. One tradition says that the competition between the brothers Dirck and Wouter was out so bitterly that they covered their works, when one came into the shop the other. On the other hand it is known that both supported and ran artistic works each other. In the period 1559-1567 he created four monumental glass window for the St. Janskerk in Gouda. From 1570 until his death in 1589 he regularly with Glaser January Woutersz. with respect to the maintenance of the window mentioned. Except for the windows, which he created for the Church in Gouda, are attributed to him designs for windows in Braunschweig ( 1560 ) and Paris ( 1567). After his brother Dirck 1574 death, he took over the function of the urban Bauzeichners (town draftsman ), which already held his father in front of his brother.
