The Zeledonie ( Zeledonia coronata ) is a small songbird and the only member of the genus Zeledonia. Robert Ridgway named the type after the Costa Rican ornithologist José Castulo Zeledon. Previously, the bird was placed in a separate family Zeledoniidae and it was assumed a relationship to Wrens ( Troglodytidae ) or the chokes ( Turdidae ). It is a widespread species in Costa Rica and Panama. The IUCN lists them as " not at risk " ( least concern ).

Features

Zeledonien reach a body length of 12 centimeters. The wing length is 6 to 6.6 inches in the male, the female, about 5.95 to 6.5 inches. Adults and fledglings from the first year to have a orange - reddish-brown crown, black crest side strips, a weakly indicated dark eye line and a pale eye-ring. The rest of the head feathers and the underside plumage is dark slate- gray, with dark olive flanks and under tail-coverts. The neck and the top feathers are also dark olive. Wings and tail are dark brown with dark olive feather edges, legs dark brownish flesh color and the bill blackish.

Resources, nutrition and reproduction

Zeledonien are resident birds and migrate only limited within the altitudes of the stations inhabited by them. The distribution area stretches along the mountain range Cordillera de Guanacaste in northern Costa Rica to the south-east of West Central Panama. Zeledonien inhabit dense bamboo thickets in cool, moist mountain forests and the tropical vegetation form páramo at altitudes of 1500-2500 meters.

They feed mainly on insects and spiders that they ferret out in the dense undergrowth. Your out Moss, with a side entrance, built nest they lay prefers well hidden on moss-covered earnings. The breeding season is between April and June. A clutch usually consists of two braungefleckten white eggs. About the incubation period has not been investigated.
