Halfbeak Hecht ( Dermogenys pusilla )

The halfbeak pike or pike -headed Halfbeak ( Dermogenys pusilla ) is a fish of the family Zenarchopteridae, which was formerly classified as a subfamily in the Halbschnäblern, but now even has family status. The halfbeak Hecht comes from Thailand to Singapore before in fresh and brackish water. As the name suggests, the head resembles that of a fish the pike. Here, the lower jaw is greatly extended compared to the upper jaw. The elongated body of the fish are similar to the pike. The animals have a bright silvery color that shimmers with different colors depending on the light, and transparent fins. The males have conspicuous red spots in the dorsal and the anal fin. Halfbeaks can be up to seven inches tall. The males remain significantly smaller.

Behavior

The halfbeak pike occurs in standing and slowly flowing waters of Southeast Asia. He is a typical surface fish, that is, he spends his whole life just below the water surface. There it feeds primarily on flying insects that fall onto the water surface. However, he also eats mosquito larvae and small crustaceans. Halfbeaks among the viviparous fish; they do not lay eggs, but give birth to fully developed young fish. The males possess a so-called andropodium with which the females are fertilized internally.
