Development of weight classes in wrestling

In the ancient Olympic Games there was no weight limit. So that was also at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens. The smaller and lighter wrestlers were therefore naturally disadvantaged. The Wrestling World Championships 1904 were one of the first tournaments, where it was distinguished by weight. The " two -tier system " saw a class for the wrestler with a body weight below 75 kg and one for about before. In 1906 there were at German Championships for the first time weight classes ( light, medium and heavy weight). In the Summer Olympics 1912 in Stockholm, was in spring (up to 60 kg), lightweight ( to 67.5 kg), medium (up to 75 kg), light heavyweight ( to 82.5 kg) and heavy weight ( about 82.5 kg ) differed. Even after the First World War, this classification was buried with. At the Olympic Games in 1924 and in 1928 in Greco-Roman wrestling champion were determined in six weight classes in freestyle in seven. This was due to the different definition of the heavyweight brand. In Greco-Roman style, however, it was still 82.5 kg in freestyle at 87 kg. The classification system in freestyle was used from 1930 onwards for the Greco- Roman style.

After the Second World War, an eighth weight class was introduced with the flyweight. The classes were now at 52, 57, 62, 67, 73, 79, 87 and 87 kg. In 1962, the classes were slightly changed, the emphasis now was started at 97 kg. At the 1972 Olympics the classification were introduced in 10 weight classes. The new weight classes this were the paper weight ( below 48 kg) and the super heavyweight (over 100 kg). In 1985, the super-heavyweight was limited to 130 kg in 2002, this value was reduced to 120 kg. With 10 classes, the number of classes 1972-1996 peaked. During this time, the dispositions remained unchanged. Only after the 1996 Olympics in lowering the number of classes back to eight. Since 2002, there are seven weight classes.
