Wrynose Pass

The Three Shires Stone on the Wrynose Pass

K

The Wrynose Pass is a mountain pass in the Lake District in Cumbria, England.

The pass is at an altitude of 393 m and is bounded to the north from the summit of Pike of Blisco and in the south from the summit of Swirl How. From the west, a road leads from Hardknott Pass through the Duddon Valley to the pass. The road drops to the east in the Little Langdale valley. The road was built in the 2nd century by the Romans to connect its port and the fort at Ravenglass with their fort at Ambleside. The road is often closed with a slope of up to 30 percent of one of the steepest in England and in the winter due to ice and snow.

On the Wrynose Pass is the Three Shire Stone, because until 1974, was the border of Counties Cumberland, Lancashire and Westmorland here.

On the Wrynose Pass is located near the Three Shire Stone the source of the Duddon and the source of the Brathay.
