Wu Bangguo

Wu Bangguo (Chinese吴邦国/吴邦国, Pinyin Wú Bangguo, * July 1941 in the district Feidong in Anhui Province in China) is a Chinese politician. Currently ( 2004) he has been chairman of the National People's Congress, the Parliament of the People's Republic of China. He was from 2002 to November 2012 Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China.

Biography

Wu Banggu was born in 1941 in the district Feidong in Anhui Province. He joined in 1964 the Communist Party of China and graduated from Tsinghua University in Radio and Electronics Department as an engineer, which he completed in 1967. From 1967, he then worked as laborers, technicians and office manager of the Shanghai factory No. 3 for electron tubes. From 1978 he was a member as deputy manager of the Shanghai Society for the electronics industry.

Wu Bangguo spent the longest part of his political career in Shanghai and is therefore regarded as a member of the Shanghai clique. In 1983 he became a member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and 1985, deputy party secretary of Shanghai. In 1991 he was Party Secretary of Shanghai. He was given the responsibility for the reform of state-owned enterprises by the State Council in 1999. He also led the oversight of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam.

Wu Bangguo was Vice Premier under Zhu Rongji.
