Wu Hu

Wu Hu (Chinese五胡; pinyin Wǔ Hu; literally "Five Hu " ) is a collective term for various non-Chinese, but at times over the Chinese territory executive, steppe peoples during the Han Dynasty to the Northern Dynasties.

The Chinese word " Hu " (胡) means " difficult to understand " and refers to the non- Chinese speaking peoples of the steppe areas. The word " Wu " means "five ". Originally, the term, the five tribes of nomadic horsemen called on the northern border of China: Xiongnu (匈奴), Xianbei (鲜卑), di (氐), Qiang (羌), and Jie (羯). The most powerful of the tribes were the Xiongnu, who were at times referred to as " Hu ". Later, the term " Hu " was used as a collective term for all the north of China's borders living horsemen.
